General Specification Guidelines for
SPF (Sprayed Polyurethane Foam)
Roofing Systems 2002

PART 1 - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1.01 Description

A. General Description of Work: Provide all labor, materials and equipment necessary. to complete the polyurethane foam roof system as indicated in the specifications chosen. Principal items of work include, but are not limited to:

1. Preparation of all surfaces to receive work under this section, including all required inspections to determine if moisture is present within the existing roofing membrane on remedial work.

2. Furnishing an application of a minimum of one and one-half (1.5) inches of spray applied polyurethane foam insulation on remedial, and two (2) inch minimum on new construction and a protective coating system designed for your application by approved manufacturers.

3. Furnishing and installing roof vents where required.

4. Miscellaneous coating and painting of metal surfaces.

5. Construction work, if any, as indicated on drawings if applicable.

1.02 Quality Assurance

A. Qualifications of Foam/Coating Contractor submitting the bid: The polyurethane foam insulation and protective coating system shall both be applied by a single contractor, who shall meet the following requirement:

1. Contractor shall have prior experience in handling and spraying polyurethane foam of the type specified and have a thorough knowledge in the use of the required spray equipment.

2. Contractor shall be approved by the respective manufacturer (see products section), hereinafter designated as the "roof system manufacturer" and provide evidence of such approval to "roof system purchaser" hereinafter designated as the "Owner," prior to signing of contract.

3. Mechanics applying the roof system must operate under direct supervision of an individual who holds an Approved Applicator Certificate from the roof system manufacturer.

B. Container Label: Include the following on the label of each container: Manufacturer’s name, type and class of material, density of foam, Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Classification Issue number, batch or lot number, date manufactured for products with limited shelf life, mixing instructions and precautions. Any bulk material must be certified by the manufacturer, as per specifications.

C. Initial Roof Area Inspection: The application contractor and the representative of the roof system manufacturer shall inspect the entire roof areas prior to application of any material. This initial inspection shall be made to verify that all surfaces have been prepared properly as specified in Paragraph 3.02 and meet the roofing requirements of the polyurethane foam and coating manufacturer. If any deficiencies exist, application contractor shall correct said deficiencies as directed by the representative of the roof system manufacturer.

D. Foam Substrate inspection: Prior to coating application, an inspection shall be made by the representative of the roof system manufacturer to verify the polyurethane foam was applied in accordance with respective guidelines as specified hereinafter.

E. Coating Application Inspection: During initial coating application, the representative of the roof system manufacturer’ must be present to verify protective coating is being applied in accordance with respective guidelines as specified hereinafter.

F. Final Inspection: Upon completion of the project, a final coating inspection shall be made by the application contractor and representative of the roof system manufacturer. This final inspection shall be conducted for the sole purpose of determining whether the protective coating is uniform and if the proper dry mil thickness has been achieved by the contractor. If any deficiencies exist, the application contractor shall correct said deficiencies as directed by the representative of the roof system manufacturer and an additional inspection shall take place.

1.03 Submittals

A. Submit manufacturer’s literature, certificates, and warranty to the Owner in accordance with requirements specified in Terms and Conditions and Part 1, General Requirements.

1. All required submittals shall be submitted to Owner in a single package.

2. Copies of product literature that indicate more than one product or system on a sheet shall be clearly marked to indicate applicable item. Non—applicable material shall be crossed out.

3. Submit all proposed modifications or exceptions to the requirements of this specification in a letter of transmittal for Owner review. Otherwise, all requirements as specified shall be adhered to.

B. Manufacturer’s Literature: Manufacturer’s literature and technical data on the polyurethane foam, the protective coating system, and primer (if required) shall be submitted. The literature and technical data shall include material specifications and application instructions of the roof system manufacturer.

C. Contractor’s Certificate: Submit a Copy of Licensed Contractor’s Certificate as issued by the roof system manufacturer. This certificate shall be in force prior to date for receipt of bids.

 

D. Warranty: Submit a copy of roof system manufacturer’s Ten-Year Full System Urethane Foam/Coating, No Leak Warranty. Provisions of the warranty shall meet the warranty requirements as hereinafter specified.

1.04 Product Delivery, Storage & Handling

A. Deliver only approved materials to the job site.

B. Materials shall be delivered in sufficient quantities so as not to cause delays in the work.

C. Contractor for work, under this section shall be responsible for storage and protection of all materials required. Store materials in a place which has been specifically assigned for that purpose. Do not store materials on the roof. Materials shall be protected from the weather and out of the direct rays of the sun. Materials shall be stored in a manner so as not to exceed the manufacturer’s temperature limitations. In all cases, the storage and handling of materials shall conform to the requirements of the manufacturer and the applicable safety regulatory agencies.

D. All waste materials and debris shall be cleaned up daily and placed in suitable metal containers or shall be removed from the job site at the end of each working day. Special care shall be taken in disposal of flammable materials.

E. Any damaged materials or materials not conforming to the specified requirements shall be rejected by the Owner. Rejected materials shall be immediately removed from the job site and be replaced at no additional cost to the Owner.

1.05 Environmental Conditions

A. Air temperature and substrate temperature shall be within the polyurethane foam manufacturer’s established limits for the type of foam formulations used. Polyurethane foam should not be sprayed during inclement weather and when the following conditions exist:

1. If surface moisture is present; or where moisture meter readings are in excess of 15 percent or on the plus side of the moisture meter scale (Delmhorst Model BD-7 Moisture Detector).

2. Under no circumstances shall foam be sprayed if wind velocity is over 25 miles per hour.

3. If relative humidity is above 80 percent.

B. Instruments used for recording the environmental conditions shall be correctly calibrated recognized industry standard instruments.

C. A log sheet will be provided by the contractor showing the date the work was performed, the ambient temperature range during the time the work was done and when rain occurred.

1.06 Job Condition

A. Protect the building structure, mechanical equipment and other surfaces adjacent to the work from overspray from either the foam or coatings material. Protective coverings shall be secured against wind and shall be vented to prevent collection of moisture on covered surfaces. Protective coverings shall remain in place for the duration of the work. Any surfaces, which have been damaged, shall be cleaned, restored or replaced to the satisfaction of the Owner and at no expense to the Owner.

B. Equipment shall be located and used so as not to endanger the structure or other materials on the site. All equipment shall be explosion—proof type. All spray hoses and pumping equipment shall be grounded.

C. Provide all scaffolding, staging, ladders, etc., to properly execute the work. Place so as not to adversely affect the normal daily operations or interrupt free passage to and from the building. Scaffolding and staging shall comply with all state and local codes.

D. Storage, wheeling, or trucking will not be permitted directly on roofing surfaces. Material handling equipment shall be selected and operated so as not to damage existing construction or new roofing systems.

1.07 Warranty

A. Contractor for work under this section shall furnish the respective manufacturers Ten Year Full System Urethane Foam/Coatings No Leak Warranty covering labor and materials.

 

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 General

A. Polyurethane foam insulation and protective coating shall have been tested by the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and bear an UL-790 Class "A" Classified label. The Class "A" certification shall apply to a non—combustible deck with not less than one (1) inch thickness of polyurethane foam and top coated with a protective coating. Materials shall meet the minimum requirements as hereinafter specified.
